Metatarsal Fracture

What is a metatarsal fracture?

The metatarsals are the long bones of the feet.
How does it occur?

Mid-shaft fracture: This usually occurs from a
violent twist of the foot, but can also happen if a
heavy object lands on the foot.

Jones fracture: This is a stress fracture caused from
overuse. Because of overactivity, the bone gradually
wears out and breaks.

What are the symptoms?
Pain, swelling, and tenderness on the outer side
of the foot. There will be difficulty walking.
(My symptoms sound like a Jones fracture or actually a
combination of Jones and mid-shaft fracture)

How is it diagnosed?
Your provider will review your symptoms, ask how
you injured your foot, and examine you.
Ddiagnosed by an x-ray showing a break in the bone.
Some x-rays do not detect stress fractures, and a special
test called a bone scan may need to be done.

How is it treated?
The treatment depends on the type of fracture you have.
There are several ways to treat each type of fracture.

Mid-shaft fracture: This can be treated by wearing a
stiff-soled shoe, a removable cast boot, or a cast for 6 to
8 weeks. You will usually be on crutches until you can walk
without pain.

Jones fracture: These fractures sometimes take a longer time
to heal. A stress fracture can be treated with a removable cast boot or
cast worn for 6 to 8 weeks. You may need to have surgery and
have a screw placed in your bone to holdthe broken
bone together. You willusually be on crutches until you walk
without pain.
(I was told yesterday that if this casting does not work,
I will have to have a pin placed)

Treatment will also include:
Elevating your foot by placing a pillow underneath it. Try
to keep your foot above the level of your heart.
*
Taking an anti-inflammatory medicine or other pain
medicine prescribed by your provider.
*
If you are not in a cast, you should apply ice packs to your
for 20 to 30minutes every 3 to 4 hours for the first 2
to 3 daysor until the pain goes away. Thereafter, ice your
foot at leastonce a day until the other symptoms are gone.

How long will the effects last?
Fifth metatarsal fractures usually heal within 6 weeks.
Jones fractures may take longer to heal
and may need surgery.

What the hell was that ????

Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On
****
Another item for my
"1st time list"
We all have a first time list..
You know..
*
1st time kissed
*
1st time you saw the ocean
*
1st time you fell in love
*
1st time you made love
*****
1st time you were in an earthquake
******
*
That's right- I go to Reno to visit friends and
enjoy a little r & r. But now R&R means
*
rattle & rock
******
A 5.0 earthquake hit at 11:40 pm Friday night
**
We were sitting in the living room and we
heard a loud noise --
Reminded me of the sound of a big truck that
is not running right
then the house started to shake
What the hell is that !!!
****
It is sort of like a bad hydraulic
ride at Universal Studios. The furniture
shakes, and at the same time it is throwing
you inner ear balance into turmoil.
*****
The feeling "after" the quake reminds
me of the jello knee walk you do
after being onboard a ship for 3 straight days.
*******
So that is the new addition to my lists of "FIRSTS"
****
I'll tell you about the rest of my trip later ..
I am glad to be home !!
I missed my Tom and my fur babies and
my own bed.

C R A P ! ! ! ! !

Just what I wanted ..
NOT!!!
Finally went to the foot doctor today..
**
After a month of hobbling around.
Diagnosis
Stress fractures in right foot..
REMEDY:
Cast for 2 week.
**
Once identified the stress fracture usually responds
readily to treatment. Treatment usually includes some t
ype of immobilization commonly with what we refer to
as a soft cast. This may be accompanied by a special shoe to fit
over the soft cast to help immobilize the foot. This must be
done in conjunction with a decreased activity level.
***
This is usually left in place for about two weeks and \
then a smaller bandage can be applied. After this initial
three week period of immobilization ( soft cast wrapping) and
surgical shoe, activity must be kept to a
minimum for a total of six weeks to allow
the area to heal. The above is a general description
of the treatment..
This S U C K S !!!

Friendship ??

So what do you think of a woman that blows
off a friendship , not once
BUT TWICE
Yes ,we all know who I am talking about and
I will be sending her a copy of this as well.
****
Okay , I screwed up and accepted her apology
for her acting like a shithead. I even
went to her house for a visit . Has she ever
returned the visit or the phone call.
HELL NO
Has she ever accepted and invitation
that does not fit her coloring book addiction.
Oh HELL NO
My Mistake!!
*****
Won't Happen AGAIN..
******
I guess because I don't want to sit and clip
and color pretty papers, that leaves me out of
her "inner circle". Well trust me
your inner circle will disappear as soon as you
start treating them like you have treated me .
And while I am at it , It is really a shame that you
have also blown off another woman that befriended
you when you worked for the fire department..
****
Someday you will need some company,
and I hope you get the same treatment that you
are handing out . I don't want to hear , depressed,
in pain, to busy , to sunny , to fucking anything.
Honey, I have rowed that boat and still
had times for friends and new adventures.
***
You have never learned those social graces
and I don't think you ever will. If it isn't
EXACTLY what you want to do, it isn't worth doing
Get real-- you are obviously believing your
own princess dreams..
*****
It is a shame that you do not have any
life long friends, but I don't think you are
capable of that type of relationship.

Isn't this special???

Finally went to the clinic yesterday..
My right foot has been swollen and
painful.. Only to find out that I
have cellulitis. I had never heard of this
until yesterday. Oh joy , lucky me ,
something else to add to my list of
"strange & unusual" things my body
will or will not do.
******
What is cellulitis? What are symptoms of cellulitis?
*****
Cellulitis is a spreading bacterial infection of the skin
and tissues beneath the skin. Cellulitis usually
begins as a small area of tenderness, swelling, and
redness. As this red area begins to enlarge, the person
may develop a fever—sometimes withchills
and sweats—and swollen lymph nodes
("swollen glands")near the area of infected skin.
*****
Unlike
impetigo, which is a very superficial skin
infection, cellulitis refers to an infection also involving
the skin's deeper layers: the dermis and subcutaneous
tissue. The main bacteria involved in cellulitis
are Staphylococcus ("staph"), the same bacteria
that cause many cases of impetigo. Occasionally, other
bacteria may cause cellulitis as well.

******

So does this mean no more going barefoot??

I mean, we all know I have a small collection

of shoes, but does this mean

I will actually have to wear them??

*****

This is very painful and right now the

only shoes I can wear are crocks.

*********************************************

So I am on antibiotics for the next 10 days
